EYFS – Ash Class (Reception)

Our youngest children are very lucky to have a bespoke built classroom with an outdoor area which allows for free flowing learning opportunities.

The children cover both the Prime and Specific areas of learning, supported by an experienced Early Years teacher and Nursery Nurse.

The children do use the facilities of the main school building for lunch times, assemblies and PE times. This provides our reception children with the best of both world; a safe EYFS environment whilst being introduced to ‘big school’.

The Foundation Stage Curriculum

In Reception, we follow the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). The children will learn new skills, acquire new knowledge and demonstrate understanding through the seven areas.

PRIME AREAS
Personal, social and emotional development, Physical Development and Communication and Language.

SPECIFIC AREAS
Literacy, Mathematics, Understanding of the World, Expressive arts and design.

The prime areas run alongside and support learning in all other areas, so these are our focused areas when the children start school.

We ensure activities support the CHARACTERISTICS OF EFFECTIVE LEARNING.

PLAYING AND EXPLORING – Children investigate and experience things, and ‘have a go’.

ACTIVE LEARNING – Children concentrate and keep on trying if they encounter difficulties and enjoy achievements.

CREATING AND THINKING CRITICALLY – Children have and develop their own ideas, make links between ideas, and develop strategies for doing things.

LEARNING OVERVIEW

Teaching and learning is linked to planned Big Experiences. These experiences require pupils to apply their learning, developing their knowledge and practice in skills. Our EYFS curriculum links to our primary curriculum drivers where appropriate, and our EYFS pupils enjoy taking part in our whole school Super Learning Days (see the grid below).
